The UK is one of the least-wooded countries in Europe but we’re working hard alongside the Woodland Trust to rectify this and reintroduce more trees into our beautiful countryside, communities, schools and urban areas. That’s why we’ve been partnered with the Woodland Trust since 2004.
Our partnership offers our customers the opportunity to directly contribute to restoring the environment. We have worked collaboratively with the Woodland Trust and our suppliers to create woodland products, such as woodland free range eggs, with 1p for every dozen sold donated back to the charity. Every time our customers buy our woodland free range eggs, we’re planting trees together.
In just 17 years of partnership with the Woodland Trust we have raised over £11.1 million which has helped to plant millions of native trees and protected thousands of acres of woodland throughout the UK. Sainsbury's have supported the Woodland Trust to deliver key projects over the years. in 2012 we celebrated the Queens Jubilee and planted over 6 million trees and created 60 Jubilee woods. In 2014 Sainsbury's pledged over £4 million to become the lead sponsor for the First World War Centenary Woods project. We planted millions of native trees for those who lost their lives in WW1 and have created four woods, one of which we created a Sainsbury's Community Orchard. More recently, in 2018, we were the lead sponsor of the Queens Commonwealth Canopy where the public could apply for free trees to plant in their communities. Our support for these projects and Free Tree Packs for School and Communities, which we have supported every year, help us to engage with thousands of communities and helping children to reconnect with nature. Giving back to the community and ensuring that we remain a sustainable retailer are just two of the core values that are central to our anniversary and integral to this partnership.
The Woodland Trust has been standing up for trees since 1972 and is the country’s largest woodland conservation charity. Not only is the charity committed to planting trees and restoring woodland, they also aim to increase awareness of the importance of trees to the environment and community.
The Woodland Trust needs everyone's help to get the millions of trees planted that we need to help fight climate change. Sainsbury's fund the Free Tree Pack imitative where anyone can apply for free trees to plant in their communities and schools (UK only). To find out more please go to:

“Trees have never been more important for our future. From fighting climate change to sustainable wildlife, they are a key solution in the drastic challenges facing us all. Thanks to Sainsbury's we've protected our existing estate and got millions of trees in the ground across the country. Weather they are growing on a farm or at the heart of an urban community, each one has the potential to make a difference"
