Online boom creates 900 jobs

Our new online fulfilment centre in Bromley-by-Bow is shaping the future of retailing while boosting employment. Equipped with advanced automation and technology, it has created jobs for 900 colleagues who will handle up 25,000 orders every week.

Not only are Sainsbury’s online shopping services attracting more and more customers, but they are also helping to create hundreds of new jobs.

Online grocery shopping is particularly popular in London. In response to rising demand in the capital, we recently opened a new online fulfilment centre in Bromley-by-Bow.

Spanning 185,000 sq ft, this new facility will play an important role in making it possible for customers to shop wherever and whenever they want using our online channels.

Jobs bonanza

It will also employ over 900 people in a variety of roles including drivers and order pickers, product replenishers and managers. We began recruiting for the first 470 positions in mid-2016 and plan to recruit another 430 colleagues by 2020.

“It’s fantastic that Sainsbury’s is creating 900 jobs for Londoners.”

By then, online shopping is likely to be even more popular. We launched our online grocery business in 1999 and, within five years, sales had reached £1bn. Sales continue to grow by double digits.

As Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s Director of Online, explains: “Demand for our online delivery services in the capital continues to grow. Our online orders are currently picked from supermarket stores across the UK and this model will continue. But the Bromley-by-Bow centre will help us keep pace with demand in London, enabling us to fulfil another 25,000 orders per week.”
