  • Customers can also benefit new Argos store, Tu Clothing and Habitat ranges

Sainsbury’s has welcomed customers to try out its newest supermarket following the opening of its brand-new store in Meols Cop Retail Park in Southport. Featuring an unbeatable combination of quality fresh food, great value, innovative products and brilliant colleague service, the long-awaited store is showcasing the best of Sainsbury’s for residents and visitors to the area.

On Wednesday MP for Southport Damien Moore joined colleagues and customers to cut the ribbon and unveil Sainsbury’s Southport Meols Cop to the community.

The 45,000 sq ft store is centred around a state-of-the-art food hall that is designed to help customers rediscover the joy of food, showcasing Sainsbury’s revitalised commitment to ‘Good food for all of us’. From tasty fresh food and fruit and veg to bread and pastries baked daily, frozen favourites and kitchen cupboard essentials, customers will find a delicious section of branded and own-brand products throughout the store. Meanwhile, new digital signage and displays are designed to help customers feel more inspired and make the store easier to navigate.

The new supermarket also features the retailer’s much loved Habitat and Tu Clothing ranges, an Argos store inside the store that will enable customers to purchase thousands of great value toys, home products and electricals while picking up their groceries.

Just outside the store in its spacious car park, customers can find Sainsbury’s brand-new ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging service, Smart Charge. Speedy, reliable and easy to use, the new facility will allow customers to charge EVs at one of eight 150kW+ charging bays in as little as 30 minutes – providing enough power to travel up to 200 miles.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Director of Property, Procurement and EV Ventures, said:
“I’m really proud of everyone who has helped to deliver this fantastic new store. We’re determined to be First Choice for Food, ensuring more customers in more of our stores can enjoy more brilliant Sainsbury’s food and our new Southport store is a prime example of how we’re doing just that.

“It was also really exciting to celebrate the launch of another Smart Charge location, part of our plan to give confidence in public EV charging a major boost by building a trusted ultra-rapid charging brand that helps reduce range anxiety for EV drivers nationwide.

“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the local community in Southport for all your support and patience whilst we constructed this store – I appreciate it’s been a long time coming and I hope everyone will agree it was worth the wait.”

Ash Metcalfe, Sainsbury’s Southport Meols Cop Store Manager said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming customers through the doors of our brand-new store today and we look forward to getting to know many of them in the months and years to come.

“This is a really proud moment for me and my team as we launch an amazing new supermarket that puts our commitment to providing good food for all of us into practice for the benefit of all our customers in and around Southport.”

The store will be an active member of Sainsbury’s Nourish The Nation Programme including its food donation partnership with Neighbourly, which works to reduce the amount of food waste within its operations and redistribute surplus food to those who need it most. Through its relationship with Neighbourly, the store has already established a food donation partnership with the food bank Shoreline Church.
