The five simple changes that could boost your property value by up to £5000

11 June 2018

Making simple changes to your front garden could add as much as £5000 to the value of your home.

According to McGregor gardening experts, who have teamed up with hybrid estate agents Emoov.co.uk, simple changes such as mowing the lawn and trimming the hedge can make all the difference when putting your house on the market.

Emoov valued a property that the McGregor team tackled before and after its garden transformation, and its market value increased by a whopping £5000.

“House hunters generally take about ten seconds to decide on a house, a decision often made on first impressions from the doorstep, so every effort makes a difference. Viewers want their home to be Instagram-worthy, to buy a lifestyle not just a house. Therefore, a well-pruned garden could be the deciding factor on whether to buy or not to buy!” said Emoov Local Property Agent, James Kenyon.

Andrea Derrick, Brand Manager at McGregor, available exclusively at Argos, said: “It’s the simple changes that anyone can do that add value to your property. Investing in a good lawnmower can cost as little as £60 and easily deliver a huge return. Whether you decide to move or improve your property, making sure your home is in the best condition will maximise its ‘kerb appeal’, making you feel great whenever you’re home.”

McGregor sent in a green-fingered team to make over Jane Robertson’s garden in South Manchester. The team transformed the over-grown jungle in just one day by simply mowing the lawn, pressure washing the pavements, weeding, trimming the bushes and creating some new flower beds to add a touch of colour. Some pretty window boxes, a painted fence and brand-new garden furniture completed the transformation.

Jane was delighted with the overhaul and subsequent house price rise.  She said: “I didn’t believe that easy, affordable changes like gardening would make such a big difference to the value of my property and the time it takes to sell! I will certainly be investing in a selection of gardening tools for my next home.  Pass me the secateurs!”

McGregor’s top five tips to increase your property’s kerb appeal include¹:

  1. A tidy, green lawn - an overgrown lawn is a huge turn-off for potential buyers. The McGregor 33cm Cordless Rotary Lawnmower is an affordable but reliable lawnmower which will keep your garden looking tidy through every season.

  2. Colourful plants – a well-kept, colourful flower bed grabs attention but needs maintaining.  McGregor recommends using its three-piece garden tool set.

  3. Trimmed hedges and shrubbery – kept neatly they can boost kerb appeal massively and are currently more on-trend than fences and walls. A cordless trimmer allows you to keep hedges and shrubs tidy and is easy to use anywhere.

  4. Clean patio or pathway – a freshly washed pathway can make a property look brand new. This McGregor pressure washer is compact, easy to use and lightweight.

  5. Weed removal - key for any garden to bloom flowers is weed removal, and a good digging spade  or fork is a necessity. McGregor offers both at great prices.
