Argos reveals the great carb comeback as Brits ditch spiralizers for pasta, bread and potato gadgets

26 February 2018

Brits are choosing to ditch faux carbs and embrace the real deal as sale and demand for carb-preparation gadgets is on the rise while sales of spiralizers have dropped.
Leading retailer Argos has reported that sales of spiralizers, famous for making ‘courgetti’ or ‘courgette spaghetti’, have fallen 65 per cent year-on-year, yet sales have increased for potato ricers (20 per cent) and pasta makers (10 per cent).  Argos has also seen online searches for ‘bread makers’ increase by 106 per cent vs. last year.

This comes as a recent study from Stanford University  claims that low-carb diets, like the keto diet which is popular with many celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, are not necessarily better for losing weight than low fat diets. According to the NHS, wholegrain starchy carbs, like bread, rice, potatoes and pasta have many health benefits as they provide a slow release of energy throughout the day .

Dawn Ritchie, Kitchen Buyer at Argos, said: “Our data suggests that customers are tired of faking it when it comes to carbs. Rather than buying spiralizers, they are choosing to invest in gadgets that allow them to enjoy the real deal, such as pasta and bread makers, and potato ricers.

“This leads us to believe that not only are Brits consuming more carbs, but that there is a trend for spurning ready meals in favour of making delicious pasta and bread from scratch.”
