Driving Support for the Poppy Appeal: Sainsbury's Car Park Takeover

07 November 2016

As one of the longest supporting partners of The Royal British Legion, this year Sainsbury’s has decided to give the charity some space – parking space.

After 22 years in partnership with the charity, Sainsbury’s is stepping things up a gear, and has spray-painted poppies across 22 of its car parks nationwide. From London to Blackpool, the guerrilla-style painted poppies will feature on the parent and child and disabled parking bays to raise awareness of the charity.

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to ‘rethink Remembrance’ during this year’s Poppy Appeal and recognise the service and sacrifices made across all generations of the British Armed Forces. Sainsbury’s hopes that the painted poppies will raise awareness of this.

The poppies in Uxbridge (pictured) were designed and painted by Pegasus Street Artist, whose art includes commissions for Adele and Lindsay Lohan and work for Johnny Depp.

Speaking of the news Anna Harland, Sainsbury’s Head of Corporate Responsibility and Society, said: “The Royal British Legion is such a fantastic cause and we hope that our pop-up poppies will help raise awareness of the charity among our shoppers. Following the help of our customers and colleagues over the last 22 years, we’re revving up our fundraising once more, and are well on the road to delivering another successful year.”

In just two weeks this year, Sainsbury’s expects to raise £2 million for The Royal British Legion, to help provide vital care to the British Armed Forces past and present. In addition to bespoke products such as travel mugs and tote bags, poppy collectors will be welcomed into stores, where colleagues will provide them with free tea and coffee to help warm the spirits whilst collecting on behalf of the Legion.
