Sainsbury’s supports British farming through Open Farm Sunday sponsorship

02 June 2016

Sainsbury’s is proud to announce its sponsorship of this year’s Open Farm Sunday. As part of its support for British farming, the retailer is partnering with LEAF to help open farm gates to 1000s of visitors across the UK and give people an insight into farming on Sunday 5th June.

Building on the success of the national event, nine farms that supply various British products to Sainsbury’s will have a day packed with events for local visitors to discover the world of farming. They can get involved in a range of fun events such as tractor rides, fruit picking and food tasting events. Visitors can also take away an ‘orifarmi’ farm animal to make at home.

Farmers and growers hosting a fun-farm day:

  • Uncle Henry’s Farm in Lincolnshire – pork
  • Gore Farm in Kent – apples
  • New House Farm in East Boldre – strawberries and blueberries
  • Mauley’s Farm in Thet Valley – chicken
  • Frogmary Green Farm in South Petherton – chicken
  • Goldlands Farm just outside Wenvoe – dairy
  • Hainey Farm in Cambridgeshire – salads
  • Home Farm in Gloucestershire – beef and veal

Open Farm Sunday managed by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), gives the public the chance to experience a farm environment, discover the sights and smells of farming. Access to farming allows customers to engage with the farmers, look at the technology used, understand the story behind their food and see sustainable farming in action. It’s also a great way to teach the new generation about the farming industry.

Sue Lockhart, Head of Agriculture at Sainsbury’s said: “I’m really looking forward to Open Farm Sunday, it’s a great opportunity for families up and down the country to see the fantastic farms we have in Britain. And, it’s a chance for our farmers to bring people closer to where food comes from.”

Annabel Shackleton, Open Farm Sunday manager at LEAF adds: “It’s great to have Sainsbury’s on board this year. I would encourage everyone to get out onto a nearby farm on Sunday 5th June and spend a day learning more about British farming. I’m particularly excited about the Sainsbury’s farmers and growers that are going the extra mile to make it an extra special day of activity.”

Farms across Britain also host Open Farm School Days during June. The event provides thousands of school children with the chance to see where their food comes from and how it’s produced.
