Sports stars take to school canteen to launch Active Kids 2015

29 January 2015

England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge took residence in a school kitchen in Liverpool today to cook up a healthy meal for unsuspecting children, marking the launch of the 2015 Sainsbury’s Active Kids voucher collection scheme.

Daniel was joined in the canteen of St Paul’s RC Junior School, Merseyside, by fellow Sainsbury’s Active Kids ambassadors, Paralympic Gold medallist Ellie Simmonds. They worked with seasoned school cooks to produce a healthy snack for the pupils.

The lucky children were taking part in a PE lesson and had no idea that the hero athletes had donned their aprons and joined the school staff in the kitchen next door.

The kids came face to face with the sporting superstars when they appeared behind the dinner hatch to dish up their mini-omelette masterpieces.

Daniel Sturridge, Sainsbury’s Active Kids ambassador, said: “As a professional athlete my diet is hugely important to me and I’m constantly thinking up new healthy dishes that will boost my energy and help my performance. Kicking off this year’s Active Kids scheme by preparing some healthy treats with children from St Paul’s was a lot of fun. Good luck to all the Active Kids schools and groups that begin collecting vouchers this week.”

Tara Hewitt, Head of Sponsorship for Sainsbury’s said: “Since launching Active Kids ten years ago we have seen sport and nutrition become prolific in the classroom, and we’re proud to have helped so many schools and groups to bring these subjects to life by donating over £150million of equipment and experiences over this time. Active Kids vouchers are now back in stores ready to be collected and exchanged for our biggest ever collection of sports equipment, cooking utensils and toolkits to help kids make healthy lifestyles second nature.”

Customers just need to collect Active Kids vouchers when shopping at Sainsbury’s to donate to their local school or group. They can then be exchanged for an exciting range of active and cooking equipment, as well as special experiences.

Active Kids vouchers can be collected from now until 5 May 2015 at all Sainsbury’s stores, petrol stations and when ordering groceries online.

One voucher is earned for every £10 spent in a single transaction at Sainsbury’s Supermarkets, and one is earned for every £5 spent in a single transaction at Sainsbury’s Locals.

Sainsbury’s is committed to making a real difference to the lives of young people by supporting children to eat well, move well and live well.
