Sainsbury’s donates over £25,000 to British fishing charity

28 January 2014

Fishermen’s Mission charity was presented with a cheque of over £25,000 from Sainsbury’s. Raised over three weeks, the donation by the retailer is accumulated from the sale of select fish products sold during ‘Switch the Fish’ campaign in 2013.

5p per pack was donated by Sainsbury’s for the sale of five ‘Switch the Fish’ species, which aims to increase consumer consumption of lesser known British species such as Lemon Sole and Cornish Sardines.

Ally Dingwall, Sainsbury’s Aquaculture & Fisheries Manager at Sainsbury’s said: “We’re proud to be involved in such a great charity that benefits and supports our British fishing industry.  This donation not only goes a long way to support their work but comes as a demonstration of our customer’s growing appetite to be more adventurous in their choice of fish.”

Commodore David Dickens, Chief Executive of The Fishermen’s Mission at Fishermen’s Mission said: “We’re all extremely grateful for Sainsbury’s donation and support for the charity.  It far exceeds what we expected, so takes us a long way to support the men and women involved in British fishing.”

For three weeks last year, Sainsbury’s donated 5p from every pack sold of the five alternative Switch the Fish species to the charity.  Money raised will be used for services including visiting injured fishermen, supporting families and providing 24/7 emergency help for working fishermen.  The species included Lemon Sole, Loch Trout, Cornish Sardines, Mussels and Coley fillets.
