New slate cavern aged Cheddar now available at Sainsbury’s

15 May 2014

Sainsbury’s is pleased to offer its customers a new and exclusive cheese – Welsh slate cavern aged Cheddar which has been developed in partnership with South Caernarfon Creameries in Pwlhelli, Wales.

Carefully developed using an ancient maturing method, this delicious cheddar is stored 500 feet underground in the Llechwedd Slate Caverns within the depths of Snowdonia and allowed to mature for several months.

Win Merrells, Cheese Developer for Sainsbury’s said: “We are thrilled to offer our customers this fantastic cheese – first and exclusively. The traditional maturation process gives the cheese unique characteristics; a firmer body and depth of flavour with rich savoury notes which I am sure Sainsbury’s customers will enjoy.”

Once matured, the cheese is cut into 1.25kg blocks, hand-dipped in a blue slate coloured wax and finished with a hand crafted Welsh Dragon stamp. The cheese is available on Sainsbury’s deli counters, with a 200g packaged cheese launching within Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range in August 2014.

“We have worked with Sainsbury’s to develop a truly unique cheddar that demonstrates our Welsh heritage.  We are grateful that Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog agreed to work with us to mature our cheese at the mine” explains Alan Wyn-Jones, Managing Director at South Caernarfon Creameries. “It is an amazing maturation technique, offering customers a fabulous eating quality which we are confident they will love.”
