Sainsbury’s announce £80million bonus pot for colleagues

09 May 2014

Sainsbury’s has today announced an annual bonus pot of £80 million for its teams across the country – shared by 137,000 colleagues. This brings the total paid in bonuses up to £370 million over the last five years.

This is another boost to the total reward package at Sainsbury’s – which also includes an opportunity to have a stake in the business through the share ownership scheme, Sharesave. This year the scheme has seen its highest ever take-up – with 21,000 colleagues joining over the past year.

Chief Executive Justin King said: "Sainsbury’s is rewarding the hard work of our colleagues this year with a sector leading bonus pot. This is part of our total reward package, including a discount card and pension scheme, to ensure that Sainsbury’s remains a first rate employer and a Great Place to Work."

Sainsbury’s has also recently been accredited by Investors in People for the second time running with a Gold standard for its training and engagement programmes.

Sainsbury’s employs 161,000 people in over 1,200 stores. The company’s role as a job creator is one of its key responsibilities - both helping people into work and boosting the economy. Around 5,000 new job opportunities were created last year and the company also helps people progress into retail careers through a number of different initiatives for all levels – including its Trainee Manager and Apprenticeship schemes. Teams in store are also given the opportunity to attend City and Guilds accredited training at one of Sainsbury’s seven Food Colleges, to boost specialist food knowledge and skills including butchery and bakery.
